One week on, the search continues for the British mountaineer missing in the Sierra Nevada

One week on, the search continues for the British mountaineer missing in the Sierra Nevada: "It’s now been more than a week since the British mountaineer, John Hogbin, and two friends were caught in an avalanche in the Hoya de la Mora area of the Sierra de Nevada. The two others in the group managed to escape with their lives, but the only sign found of the 42 year old British man so far has been his climbing axe, which was found in the area of the Barranco de San Juan.

John Hogbin, who is originally from Yorkshire, moved to Zafarraya, in Granada province, 30 years ago.

The search has covered an area of 4 hectares and has involved teams of more than 100 people, aided by rescue dogs and snow ploughs from the Sierra Nevada ski resort.

The Civil Guard mountain rescue team, Sereim, were continuing with the search this Monday, February 28, by helicopter, hoping to find a trace of the missing man in low level flights over the area.

It’s understood from EFE that a group of family and friends were on the ground, combing the area where the avalanche hit."
